norwegian documentary photography

The group exhibition “Norwegian Documentary Photography” was shown at Henie Onstad Kunstsenter in Sandvika from August 2019 to January 2020 and was curated by Susanne Østby Sæther. It brought together the photographers who had been part of the Norwegian Journal of Photography and supported by the Fritt Ord foundation.

The works grew out of long-term photographic investigations and showed the breadth of documentary practice today, from press photography to contemporary art. Freedom of expression and current social questions ran through the exhibition, as did the shifting line between the documentary and the artistic.

From the long-term project “Erde, Feuer, Wind, Wasser”, published in the Norwegian Journal of Photography #4, a constellation of images was shown. The original diary of Walter Heinisch was also on display, together with a photograph he took of his family two years before the deportation and carried with him in the labour camp.
