Born in Zabrze, Poland, I spent my childhood there until my family emigrated to Germany. I completed my education in Essen, where I studied Visual Communication at the Folkwang School and received my MA in Visual Arts in 2000, trained in the tradition of Steinert’s subjective photography. In 2001 I moved to Oslo, where I still live and work.
Grounded in the documentary tradition, my photographs leave room for abstraction and for what lies beyond the frame. The projects unfold over many years in places that carry the traces of earlier lives. Increasingly, I read these places through historical consciousness, with an emphasis on the human soul and what remains of it in the landscape.
Since 2003 I have worked with students at a range of institutions, and in 2008 I joined the permanent faculty at Bilder Nordic School of Photography in Oslo. There I mostly guide them through their personal projects, in a dialogue that also sharpens my own practice. My aim is to understand the motivation behind each one, not to create copies of myself.
